Jaclyn Leedy has always loved dogs.
For the past five years, the longtime Oregonian has volunteered at Free State Four Paws, an Alabama-based dog rescue service in a county with no shelter. The more she got involved, the more she felt the need to help. She came up with an idea to spread awareness through a warm, calming moment: your morning cup of coffee.
“I knew I wanted adoption stories on coffee bags,” says Leedy. “It’s a canvas that you can use for change. You might have this bag in your kitchen for a week, maybe months. Every time you see this bag, you pick up this label. “
Leedy and her partner Mark Wilcox launched Mutt’s Coffee in November 2020, offering high quality roasted coffee beans per sachet, each featuring the face and story of an adopted dog from Free State Four Paws, with 25% of the profit going to the organization walk. Their online store now ships nationwide, and their cold brew stand is a staple at several farmers markets in the Portland area. She estimates they have donated over $ 1,000 so far, and that number is sure to grow – the coffee is pretty good.
“It’s not cheap coffee with good dog stories,” says Leedy. “It’s good coffee with good dog stories.”
